Maharashtra Defers Cooperative Bank Elections Amid Drought, Over 1,000 Societies Affected
Maharashtra has postponed elections to the Pune and Kolhapur District Cooperative Banks and other cooperative institutions until further orders amid drought conditions. The move affects over 1,000 societies in Kolhapur and halts ongoing election preparations.
The postponement is expected to affect more than 1,000 cooperative institutions in Kolhapur district alone, including the Kolhapur District Cooperative Bank. The bank’s election schedule had already been announced, and objections had also been received against the draft voter list. Hearings on these objections had been completed, with a decision expected by Thursday, October 29. However, the state government’s decision to defer the elections has put these proceedings on hold.
The development has also interrupted political preparations surrounding the Kolhapur District Cooperative Bank elections. Following the Mahavikas Aghadi’s victory in the Gokul election, supporters of Satej Patil’s group were enthusiastic, and discussions were underway about whether the Patil group would repeat its success in the district bank elections.
Meanwhile, the Mahayuti alliance had also stepped up preparations to avoid the mistakes it made in the Gokul election. Both sides had been preparing for the upcoming contest, but the government’s decision has now brought these political activities to a halt until further orders.
The state government has declared drought in 304 talukas. With drought relief and assistance work being prioritised, various government departments have been assigned additional responsibilities. The government reportedly considered the possibility that election-related duties could affect the implementation of relief measures during the election period.
Against this backdrop, the state government decided to defer elections to cooperative institutions until further orders. The move has put the immediate electoral plans of cooperative banks and other institutions on hold, while administrative efforts are being prioritised to address drought conditions across Maharashtra.
